Spring Term Monitoring

During our Spring Term LPS Review Fortnight, members of the Creative Crew Pupil Voice Group and the AoLE leader undertook workbook looks and spoke to learners.

We identified the following strengths:

All progression steps have completed a variety of cross curricular Expressive Arts activities from the new LPS Learning Projects. In LPS Spring Festival, Reception created designs on their own colourful t-shirts while learning about Holi during their Spring Festivals project. They also developed their drawing skills by drawing and painting Llangyfelach church, after a visit there. Finally they choreographed dance routines for Chinese New Year celebrations. In Amazing Astronauts, Year 1 listened to 'The Planets' by Gustav Holst and recognised how the piece of music represents planets in the solar system. They also used materials and techniques to create a stargazer's view from space. In The Roman Invasion, Year 2 designed and drew Celtic shields before using Roman Gods as the inspiration for designing and making Roman shields. In Sweyns-ey, Year 3 explored the 6 styles of Viking artwork, before deciding which style they wanted to create their own piece of Viking art in. They also choreographed Viking dance sequences focusing on emotion and expression. In Wales, Wars and Weddings, Year 4 developed their drawing skills by drawing Tudor selfies and they recognised the importance of music within Tudor culture. In Abertawe Egyptology, Year 5 researched and drew shabti figures and the work they performed. They also developed their drawing skills by designing their own burial masks. In The Origin of Species, Year 6 focused on structure and form within their drawing activities.

Music and drama are being developed across LPS. In Progression Step 1, children have appreciated music from global spring festivals and developed the use of untuned musical instruments. They have also demonstrated drama skills by acting out a skit to invite people to their spring festival. In Progression Step 2, children in Year 1 focused on the musical element tempo when creating their own musical arrangements using untuned percussion instruments. Children in Year 2 developed their drama skills whilst re-enacting Roman army formations. Children in Year 3 are thoroughly enjoying learning to play the PBuzz, and are learning about musical notation, time management, coordination and spatial reasoning.
