Spring Term Review

During our Spring Term Review Fortnight the AoLE Leader and Humanity Heroes PVG undertook a learning experience book look and listened to learners from across each progression step.

The following strengths were identified -

From listening to learners it became apparent that projects being taught in all year groups are having more of a direct link with Wales and our local area. Children in Year 5 went on a visit to the Swansea Egypt Centre to find out more about ancient Egypt and to try and help them inspire the children of Swansea to become the next Egyptologists. Children in Year 2 had the chance to visit Castell Henllys where they learnt about the influence that the Romans had on the Welsh way of life. While in Reception the children learnt about how people of Llangyfelach and Swansea celebrate different festivals and invited family and friends into school to celebrate with their own LPS festival.

It is clear that the learning projects are being covered a lot more closely and from looking at workbooks you can see how the projects flow better and are beginning to tell more of a story. In Year 1 there was a clear story in their Amazing Astronauts project, whereby they found out what astronauts needed to do, trained to be astronauts, found out about the planets. Before going on to to design and blast their own rockets off into Space. In Year 2 the journey through their Roman Invasion project was clear, as the children found out what came before the Romans and what life was like for the Celtic people before the Roman Invasion. They then went on to look at who the Romans were, where they came from and why they came here. Finally they looked at what they brought with them, how they changed the lives of the Celts and how they have influenced our lives today.

We discovered that our new RVE Big Questions had been covered in several classes this term, but not all. Members of the PVG spoke to their class teachers to remind them of their importance and that they do need to be covered next term. The children that we spoke to in classes where the Big Question had been taught, were able to discuss what they had learnt and in some instances were able to link what they had learnt to their learning project.

Our next steps are: -

  • The AoLE and Humanity Heroes will work together to monitor progress and standards across all progression steps using the Humanities progression model.

  • The AoLE and the PVG will monitor and review our new ‘RVE Big Questions’
