Learning

During the time the children spend in our service they are constantly learning, whether it be from everyday tasks and social skills to academics. All children make progress and improve but it is just at different rates depending on their age, ability and the stage they are at within their learning and development. With regards to learning different skills, this is something that we encourage across all ages within the service, especially the younger children. If a child was to ask us to do something for them, we would encourage independence and get them to have a go at it themselves before offering our help, for example putting their coat on and unpacking and packing up their lunch.

When it comes to their academic learning, we tell them what the new topic of the term is going to be and have a session with them where we ask them what they already know about the topic and what they would like to learn or just something they would like to have a better understanding of and learn more about. This is done in the form of a a staff member talking to them in a small group and writing down any ideas they may come up with and they all take it in turns to speak one after the other. We will then take their ideas and fit it into the planning as best we can. We then show them when the activity comes up in the weekly planning that their ideas are included and they are choosing what it is they want to learn.

Priorities for Improvement:

  • Further improve the development of learning within the afterschool setting, through the provision of more detailed and structured carousel of project plans that considers learner voice and choice.
