During our Autumn Term Review Fortnight the AoLE leader undertook a learning experience sampling activity which provided an overview of Humanities within each progression step.
The following strengths were identified –
Learners at progression step 1 used a local business as a stimulus for their topic. Learners at progression step 2 visited a tropical zoo in their local area to enhance their learning of rainforests. Learners at progression step 3 broadened their knowledge and understanding by learning about WW2 in Swansea and then branching out to visit the Imperial War Museum in London.
The learning experiences that were sampled highlighted once again that the children are being given activities that were cross-curricular and linked to their learning projects. In progression step one the children were seen using skills from Health & Well-Being when looking at how to be a good citizen. In Progression step 2 children were using oracy skills while discussing what makes this place so wonderful. While in Progression step 3 it was seen that the children were developing their maths skills through the use of their project. From looking at termly assessments on INSIGHT most children are achieving the expected level in all areas of Humanities.
In Humanities, there was little evidence to suggest that skills are being developed, reinforced and built upon. The AoLE leader had professional dialogue with class teachers, to identify missed opportunities for development of skills and made suggestions of how to ensure all important skills are being developed and built upon in the future.
