Sweyns-ey

The Viking raiders and settlers were a powerful and brutal force. There is so many hints across Wales today that show the impact they had on our great nation. However, there is a significant lack of understanding and investigation into the presence of the Vikings in Wales during the early medieval period (AD 700 to AD 1000). We are going to team up with Swansea Museum to explore some of the evidence of possible interactions between Viking raiders and the native population, hoping to shine a light on a misunderstood aspect of the Viking World. We will investigate what happened before the Vikings arrived and who King Arthur was, learn about Anglo-Saxon settlement and how this paved the way for Vikings to make their strongholds around our coasts. We will also learn how they met their bloody end during the Norman invasions. Together with Swansea Museum we will make a historical breakthrough and tell the world how Viking raiders shaped our nation and our city…Sweyns-ey' (Sweyn's island).

As part of the LPS Matrix approach, we thought about what we already know and came up with questions about what we want to learn and explore.

Here are some of the questions we came up with:

  • Why are the ships so long?
  • What is an Angelo-Saxon?
  • Why do they use long ships?
  • Where did the Vikings come from?
  • Did the Vikings come to Wales?
  • How long have they travelled for?
  • How many hours did the Vikings travel to get to Great Britain?
  • Why do the longships look like dragons?
