Summer Review

During our review activities, members of the Pupil Voice Group and the AoLe Leader undertook workbook scrutiny and Listening to Learners activities.

We identified the following strengths related to our Action Plan:

Standards of Numeracy

All classes continue to experience a range of numeracy tasks, set at an appropriate level for the year group, which demonstrate progression from class to class. In some classes skills for topic tasks are taught in Maths lessons before the topic task which supports pupils to confidently transfer their numeracy skills and knowledge into other areas of the curriculum and work at an equitable standard. For example, children in Year 5 recapped their data skills during a maths lesson before producing a line graph in their ‘Abertawe Egyptology’ topic.

Rich Tasks

  • PVG members scrutinised Project Books to identify whether numeracy tasks provide strong opportunities for pupils to apply numeracy skills in rich and challenging cross-curricular contexts. All teachers continue to provide numeracy opportunities linked to their topic.

  • In a few classes, tasks provided rich and challenging opportunities where the purpose and context of the task was strongly linked to the topic. For example, children in Year 2 made use of the Celtic Number System to solve and create problems. In Year 5, children used a unit of measurement from the era (Imperial measurement - feet) to calculate the area of rooms within King Tutankhamun’s tomb. This allowed the children to demonstrate their skills and knowledge, at an appropriate level, when completing these tasks.

  • In a most classes, tasks provided were linked to the topic and allowed the children to demonstrate their skills and knowledge, at an appropriate level, when completing these tasks. For example, in Year 3, the LPS Market Learning Project allowed the children to develop their adding and subtraction skill while calculating total costs of items and the required change. In Year 6, children used maps of Darwin’s voyage of the Galapagos Islands to learn about scale and distance.

Mental Maths

All classes make use of the LPS Numeracy Scheme, a variety of games and interactive games or websites to provide opportunities to develop mental strategies, with most classes having regular mental maths activities. For example, Year 1 and Year 2 provide tasks and challenges to encourage use on mental strategies. As a result, many of these pupils are able talk about and explain how they use mental strategies within their daily work.

Next Steps:

  • Share good practice of rich and challenging cross-curricular numeracy tasks.

  • Develop a consistent whole-school approach for mental maths/ times tables provision.
