Knowledge and understanding of the world

Winter and Summer Sort

For this activity, the children worked really hard identifying the picture on the card and sorting them into the summer box or the winter box. They children also enjoyed sharing what they like doing in both the winter and the summer.

Circle/Square Summer Object Sort

The children had different summer objects that they needed to identify and sort into the correct shape boxes. The children spoke about the different items, what they were and if they had ever used them before. For the objects they did not know, we explained what they are and what they are used for, asking them to tell us at the end to make sure they understood.

Shadow Comparison

The children enjoyed drawing around each others shadows and comparing them to see who is the tallest and who is the shortest. They were shocked and excited to see that everyone’s shadow is not the same size and who is the tallest.

Summer Counting

The children had a grid in front of them that they needed to fill the correct number. They had to identify the number and put them in the correct order on the grid. Whilst doing that they had the opportunity to talk in a group about the different pictures, what they were, if they had used them and whether or not they liked them.

Summer Objects - Identify and Talk

The children had a number of different objects in front of them. They needed to identify and talk about them. Then sort them into objects that we only use in the summer and objects that we can use all year.

Summer Object Lego

The children enjoyed completing this activity, there was a picture cut in half and each half was on a different Lego block. The children needed to find each half of the picture and put the blocks on top of each other to create the full picture. Once they had done this they needed to tell us what the picture was and what it is used for.

Count How Many People Are…

This activity involved the children colouring and counting. First, they spoke to each other about where the people in the picture were, what sort of things can you do at the beach and whether or not they have been to the beach before. Next, they were read a questions such as ‘how many people are sunbathing?” They then had to work out the answer, write it in the box and then colour the picture in.

Seren’s Seasons

To start with, the children listened to a story called Seren’s Seasons. Throughout this story, Seren regularly changed the contents of her wardrobe, depending on the season they were in in the story. We then spoke about why you would need different clothes, depending on the season we are in and the children then all had a turn of using the cards to dress Seren for a day out in the summer and one other season of their choice.

Summer Pairs Game

For this activity the children worked together to identify the pictures of summer items on the cards, explain what they are used for and also who they are used by. Once they had done that they were able to enjoy playing a game of pairs with each other.

Summer Time Spider Diagram

The children worked in small groups to gather all of the information they already know about summer. They also came up with some ideas of what they could learn about during this topic.
