Play, Learn and Grow Together

Summer Term

During Review Fortnight the AoLe Leader and the Humanity Heroes PVG monitored standards and learner interest across the school through book looks and listening to learner activities.

We identified the following strengths: -

After a full year of teaching our new curriculum topics it is clear that they have been fully embedded across all year groups.

After observing children’s workbooks it was evident that staff are setting activities to the correct level of the children and most pupils are being appropriately challenged. The PVG group looked at pieces of work from across each phase and were able to see a steady incline in progress. Standards continue to be high across the school, most children are aware of the high expectations and the work most children produce reflects this.

Children in Year 1 have been locating where we get most of our produce from on a map of Wales, using atlas' and created their own maps of Brynteg Farm to help future visitors, using a key. In Year 4 children have been learning about tectonic plates and drawing them on to a map of the globe.  In Year 1 children have been looking at simple food chains and in Year 6 pupils have been looking at classifying animals.

The PVG members were given a task to ask their classmates how they felt about their topics. Most children have enjoyed the projects that they have covered and are interested in learning how Wales fits in to the wider World.

The children were able to speak with interest about how Wales fitted in. Children in Year 6 carried out activities linked to The Industrial Revolution and how it affected Wales, they were able to explain how coal mining became the main industry in Wales. In Year 2 the children were able to talk about their Bay Magazine topic. They told us that they had been looking at History and Geography elements of Swansea Bay and enjoyed their trip to the beach. The children had the opportunity to learn about the history of the Mumbles light house and the different habitats of the Bay.

Learners spoke engagingly about the class trips that they had been on and agreed that what they found out and got to experience during the trip had made a positive impact on their learning back in class.

The Energy Sparks initiative is still running across the school at LPS and is continuing to raise awareness of the effects of Climate change. All year groups have carried out activities to increase their knowledge of the importance of energy saving.

After analysing our energy usage via the Energy Sparks program we can see that our energy usage is slightly reducing.

Our next steps are:-

  • The AoLe and the Humanity Heroes PVG will continue to drive the Energy Sparks initiative across the school in the hope to tackle Climate Change and become more energy efficient.

  • To implement and use the new LPS Humanities Progression models to monitor progress and standards across the school.

  • The AoLe and Humanities Heroes PVG will continue to work on our Eco Schools campaign and undertake termly litter picks in our local area.
