During our review activities, members of the Pupil Voice Group and the AoLe Leader undertook workbook scrutiny and Listening to Learners activities.
We identified the following strengths related to our Action Plan;
Standards of Numeracy
All classes continue to experience a range of numeracy tasks, set at an appropriate level for the year group, which demonstrate progression from class to class. In many classes skills for topic tasks were taught in Maths lessons before the topic task which supports pupils to confidently transfer their numeracy skills and knowledge into other areas of the curriculum and work at an equitable standard. For example, children in Year 5 recapped their data skills during a maths lesson before producing a line graph in their ‘Abertawe Egyptology’ topic.
Rich Tasks
PVG members scrutinised Project Books to identify whether numeracy tasks provide strong opportunities for pupils to apply numeracy skills in rich and challenging cross-curricular contexts. In a few classes, tasks provided rich and challenging opportunities where the purpose and context of the task was strongly linked to the topic. This allowed the children to demonstrate their skills and knowledge, at an appropriate level, when completing these tasks. For example, children in Year 2 made use of the Celtic Number System to solve and create problems. In Year 5, children used a unit of measurement from the era (Imperial measurement - feet) to calculate the area of rooms within King Tutankhamun’s tomb.
In a few classes, tasks provided were linked to the topic and allowed the children to demonstrate their skills and knowledge, at an appropriate level, when completing these tasks.
Next Steps:
Share good practice of rich and challenging cross-curricular numeracy tasks.
Work with all staff to highlight opportunities to further enrich numeracy tasks.
