During review week members of the PVG group and the AoLe undertook workbook looks and listening to learners activities. The impact and progress of the new LPS Curriculum Projects were also reviewed during this time.
We identified the following strengths related to our action plan –
All projects being covered ensure the children are being given many opportunities to learn about Wales and the Wider World, thus giving all children a sense of self and developing an identity of their place in their local community and Wales. All projects are rich in cross-curricular Geography and History with evidence prominent in both workbooks and on the school class pages. After listening to learners and engaging in discussions on their current topics, it was evident that the projects had been embedded well and most children were enjoying the work that they were doing and found it relevant to them. Children in Year 6 spoke passionately about their Wales at War project and stated how they found it interesting to learn about how Swansea was affected by the War. The children have carried out many cross-curricular activities linked to Swansea and the War and spoke about them with interest. A great example of this is how the children researched and created a timeline of main events of the Swansea Blitz, and then used ICT to create animated Swansea skylines during the War. Leaners in Year 1 have enjoyed learning about Welsh heroes and how they helped us and made our lives better. The children did research and created biographies and painted portraits of their chosen Welsh hero. It is clear to see that the children have a sense of identity and a better understanding of where Wales fits in to Wider World. Examples of this can be seen in Year 5 where they have been learning about all the different Nations of the British Empire and used data of Welsh settlers in Patagonia to solve mathematical problems.
Members of the PVG Group were fortunate to attend the Youth Cop in Cardiff a few weeks ago. The children had the opportunity to have their say regarding Global warming and deforestation of the Rain forests. They enjoyed learning about the reasons for these and how charities like The Size of Wales are working hard to tackle the ongoing problem. The children are excited to feedback to the whole school soon.
Our next steps –
The Humanity Heroes and AoLe Leader will continue to review the new LPS Curriculum projects to ensure progression and coverage of the Humanities statements of what matter. We will be reviewing the implementation of the new RVE documentation in line with CfW to ensure the children develop their awareness of themselves in relation to others – showing empathy, compassion, learning to deal with disappointment, respecting own beliefs and that of others.
The Humanity Heroes and AoLe Leader will continue to work on our Eco Schools campaign and undergo litter picks around the local area.
