Humanities in LPS – Spring Term Monitoring.
During Review Week the Humanities AoLe carried out various monitoring activities and identified the following strengths –
- After listening to a range of learners from across both phases, it is evident that the topics that are being taught are capturing the children’s interest and are being enjoyed by all. The children talked expressively about the topics they had covered so far with enthusiasm and showed good knowledge. Some children felt that during their history topic for example they were so immersed in the learning that they almost felt that they were back there at that time.
- From looking at a variety of learners workbooks from across both phases I was able to see that the children are being given opportunities to link their learning to all areas of the curriculum. The teaching and Learning of Humanities at LPS is consistently cross-curricular and the learners are benefitting from activities and experiences that are rich and meaningful. Examples of great cross-curricular links are in Year 4 where the children had been learning about Mayan Cultures and then designed their own Mayan masks. Another example can be seen in Year 1 where the children had been learning about Prehistoric animals and then drew and interpreted graphs about Prehistoric animals.
- The children are being given opportunities to both develop their knowledge and understanding of their local and national heritage and learn about the wider world. An example of this can be seen in Year 5 where the children were learning about British Empire Nations and locating them on a World map. Another example can be seen in Year 3 were they were locating where deadly animals originate from. After speaking to a range of children across the school, all children felt like they had a good understanding of where they live and held a sense of pride.
- RE is developing at LPS and children are beginning to learn more about a wider range of faiths and beliefs. After talking with children from KS2 it was evident that RE is being taught through topics where possible and also significant celebrations are being covered, such as Eid.
Next steps –
