Summer Term

Expressive Arts in LPS - Summer Term Monitoring

During Review Fortnight this term, the AoLE Leader and the Creative Crew PVG monitored Expressive Arts in LPS by listening to learners and looking at pupil’s work.

The AoLE Leader identified the following strengths related to the Action Plan:

The teaching and learning of Expressive Arts has been brilliantly linked to the LPS New Curriculum topics all year. Art remains a strong feature in LPS. All children in LPS are continuing to develop skills, knowledge, creativity and imagination whilst carrying out Expressive Arts. In Rockpool Raiders, children created observational drawings of beach huts. In LPS and Brynteg Farm, children used tone and colour mixing to create landscape paintings. In The Bay Magazine, children created beach landscape pictures with coloured pencils and they drew images of Mumbles lighthouse and lifeboats. In Our Lost History of Sweyns-ey, children explored various pieces of Viking artwork whilst focusing on the six different styles of Viking art. They also drew images of Viking longships and Viking warriors using coloured pencils. In River Ilston, children drew images of crashing waves using coloured pencils. They used Chrome Music Lab to create music to link with their river videos. In Cymru Constellations, children created spacescapes using pastels and space images by blending acrylic paints. In The Origin of the Species, children used pencils to create sketches of animal and they drew sketches of Darwin and Wallace. They have also been working in the style of Pop Art.

Drama continues to be developed in LPS. They are established many important drama skills such as communication, listening, observing, rehearsing and performing. Children in Foundation Phase have been taking part in role plays linking to their literacy activities. Children in LKS2 have carried out improvisation drama activities linking to their topic. Children across both school phases have used playscripts during their group reading sessions. Drama gives children opportunities to express themselves, deal with emotions and feelings in a supportive environment, and to generate new knowledge and transferable skills.

Music has been a strong feature in LPS this year. The AoLE Leader has been working with Swansea Music Service to introduce a new musical instrument to KS2. The PBuzz has proved to be an enjoyable instrument to play and the children have loved learning and performing with it. Children in KS2 performed with children from numerous Swansea Primaries in the PBuzz Buzzalong Bonanza and they performed for parents in our LPS Summer Music Show. Performing in events like these help children develop social skills, build empathy and boost self-esteem.
