Mr Burnell has asked us to organise the biggest, brightest and most beautiful spring festival that celebrates all the cultures within our wonderful community. Are we up for this challenge? How do different people celebrate events in Llangyfelach, Swansea and around the world? Why do people celebrate and what are they celebrating? Let’s explore through stories, arts, dance, music and foods – let the party begin! Celebrations are deigned to bring people together, let’s look at similarities and differences between various celebrations and festivals to plan a day for all!
We talked in groups and then shared what we already know about festivals and celebrations!

We worked together to come up with questions that we would like to find the answers to during this topic:
What happens at Easter?
Why do we eat chocolate at Easter?
Why do we eat cake at festivals?
Why do people wear different clothes at festivals?
Why do we sing songs when we are in church?
We started our learning journey by looking at the Spring months on the calendar. We decided that the months we were learning about were January, February, March and April. We watched some clips on CBeebies about Spring Festivals and decided that we would like to learn about St Dwynwen’s Day, Chinese New Year, Valentines Day, St David’s Day, Mother’s Day, Eid, Holi and Easter.
We loved hearing Miss Evans tell us the story of St Dwynwen. Watch us retell this story!

What an amazing time we had at Llangyfelach Church this morning! Father Anthony was brilliant! He told us all about the church and the festivals they celebrate in church. He told us what happens in christenings and we got to pour the holy water into the font! Some of us even poured the holy water on to Father Anthony’s head! He showed us his special robes and some of us tried them on! We talked about the Easter story and Father Anthony gave us some books to take home! What a fantastic trip!
Our Visit to Llangyfelach Church!
We decided to ask Father Anthony some of our question matrix questions! We started by asking him what happens at Easter. This is what we learnt...

We have been learning about Chinese New Year (which is also called Lunar New Year) as part of our spring festivals topic. Miss Evans read us some stories and we have tasted Chinese food. You can tell from looking at our photos that some of us liked the food, and some of us didn't!
We enjoyed listening to Miss Evans tell us the story of Chinese New Year! Click here to watch us retell it!
Every Chinese New Year is named after an animal. This year is the Year of the Snake. We used the VR Headsets to learn more about the different animals.
Chinese New Year money envelopes are given to children to give good wishes. We enjoyed putting money in the envelopes, whilst finding different ways of making the totals using different coins, and giving each other good luck messages and wishes!
Dance and creative movement feature heavily in many spring festivals, including Chinese New Year! Here we are practising our moves for a Chinese New Year Lion Dance!
We used JIT to create a class graph to show our favourite animals from the Chinese Zodiac!
One of our favourite festivals to celebrate are our birthdays! We enjoyed chatting about how we celebrate our birthdays and discussing what month our birthdays are in! Clickhereto watch us sharing when our birthdays are!
In class, we celebrated Valentines Day as one of our Spring Festivals. We created a class poem called What is Love? Here we are performing it! ❤️

Our favourite Welsh festival to celebrate is St David's Day! We celebrated St David's Day in school by taking part in a fabulous Eisteddfod! We performed a recital, we sang songs and Mrs Bate told us who had won the competitions! Clickhereto see how we celebrated St David's Day!
Check out our amazing literacy skills! For the Eisteddfod Creative Writing Competition we worked in our house teams to write rhyming poems about a Welsh dragon!
For our Eisteddfod art competition, we drew a picture of Llangyfelach Church in the style of Welsh artist Christopher Langley. Have a look at our amazing pieces of art! Celf gwych!
We loved celebrating St David's Day! We discussed how we celebrated St David's Day and how it gives us a sense of Cynefin!
We need to write a discussion text deciding which festivals we would and wouldn't like to include in our LPS Spring Festival. Click on the sticky note below to see how we planned what we are going to write about!
We celebrated Pancake Day in class! Miss Evans told us that Pancake Day (or Shrove Tuesday) marks the start of Lent, which is the 40 days before the spring festival of Easter. We enjoyed tasting yummy pancakes!

Mother's Day is a Spring Festival that we celebrate in the UK in March. It is a day where we show our Mummies how much we love them and how grateful we are for everything they do for us. Click the flower to see a very special message for our Mummies xx
We have been learning about the Hindu festival Holi. It is the festival of colour. Here we are decorating t-shirts with textile paint and fabric pens in lots of different colours, ready for our LPS Spring Festival!
Easter is coming and we are very excited! It is one of our favourite spring festivals! We did coding on JIT and we coded the turtle to get the Easter eggs!
HOORAY, IT'S FESTIVAL TIME! CLICK ON THE RAINBOW TO WATCH OUR LPS SPRING FESTIVAL!
Now that we have celebrated our festival, it's time to reflect on it's purpose and share how it made us feel and why festivals are important. Click on the sun below to watch our reflections.
