Spring Term Review

Humanities Spring Term Review

During the Spring Term Review Fortnight, the AoLE leader and Humanity Heroes PVG reviewed learners’ work and gathered pupil voice to assess engagement with the RVE Big Questions, providing valuable insight into pupils’ understanding across the school. Alongside this, progress in strengthening community links and developments within the Eco Schools Action Plan were evaluated.

This term, the key priorities were to strengthen community engagement and improve recycling across the school. Positive relationships have been developed within the local community, including successful fundraising for Matthew’s House Food Bank and strengthened links with the local church, with visits from Anthony to support learning during key events such as St David’s Day. Reception pupils also visited Llangyfelach Church to support their enquiry, “Why do people go to church?”, providing meaningful real-life context. In addition, a renewed focus on recycling has been implemented across the school, with Humanity Heroes actively monitoring new recycling bins and supporting pupils to follow Welsh Government recycling guidelines, leading to increased awareness and improved practices.

Across the school, there is clear progression in pupils’ engagement with Big Questions. In Progression Step 1, learners explored celebrations and a range of religions, developing early curiosity and growing confidence in recognising similarities and differences between beliefs. In Progression Step 2, pupils explored concepts such as light, belonging and religious practices across multiple faiths through enquiry, enabling them to make connections between beliefs and reflect on their own experiences while developing empathy. In Progression Step 3, pupils engaged with more complex questions, linking religion to history, philosophy and science. They demonstrated increasingly strong critical thinking skills, presenting balanced arguments and making informed connections across different areas of learning.

Overall, learners are developing key skills in line with the Curriculum for Wales, including curiosity, empathy and critical thinking. Engagement with real-life contexts and diverse perspectives, alongside a strong focus on community involvement and environmental responsibility, is supporting pupils to make meaningful connections with the wider world and develop a strong sense of belonging and responsibility.

Next Steps:

  • Continue to promote and monitor recycling initiatives across the school
  • Develop further community engagement opportunities, including ongoing work with the local church and litter picking activities
  • Continue to monitor and strengthen engagement with the RVE Big Questions
