Summer Review

We identified the following strengths in relation to our targets:

  • Reading carousel is carried out across nearly all classes with further consistency in approach, therefore ensuring reading is taught daily, with targeted intervention for small groups of learners within each class. Rapid Reading sessions are supporting our older learners in Progression step 2 to reinforce reading skills, while targeting high frequency word recognition. This is having an impact on standards of written work, spelling and reading fluency.
  • Workbook scrutiny demonstrates that in many classes, learners are writing to a very good standard in a range of genres, linked to their LPS Learning Projects. Many classes within Progression Step 1 & 2 are using genre specific features, planning their talk using planning skeletons and then using video clips to share their oracy work. In most classes, writing is drafted and edited effectively, challenging learners to include more detail or improved vocabulary choices within their work as well as focusing on correct punctuation. There are many good examples across the school of short burst writing and creative pieces however this is a focus for the next academic year.
  • PVG members evaluated the development of cursive handwriting across the school by undertaking a workbook scrutiny. There are many examples of continued improvement in handwriting and presentation, particularly higher up the school, therefore handwriting and presentation will continue to be promoted by the Criw but is no longer a whole school target for improvement going into the next academic year..
  • Progress in Welsh shows many areas of great practice across the school which has been acknowledged by Alys Lewis, when recently awarding LPS the Siarter Iaith Silver Award in June.

“During our morning visit to Llangyfelach Primary School, it was truly heartwarming to witness the confidence and enthusiasm your pupils have developed for the Welsh language. It is clear that both the school and the Criw Cymraeg have worked diligently to foster a positive and engaging Welsh ethos throughout the school community.”

  • The awards process also identified that the Criw and AOLE leader had an accurate and well informed view of the strengths of the school and also areas to develop further:

"The co-ordinator has ensured that learners completed the Siarter Iaith questionnaires to support the process of identifying action plans. The co-ordinator and the Criw Cymraeg feel that the results accurately reflect the needs of the school and therefore will use them as a supporting source to set an action plan moving forward. As a result of leaders and pupils who know the school and community well, these targets are valid and purposeful and are effectively shared with the whole School."
