Target 2

  • Staff have received training regarding the LPS Welsh scheme and Incidental Welsh Progression Model, enabling them to deliver the expected standards of the teaching of Welsh across the school.  This has had a positive effect on written and discussion work through the application of topic-based vocabulary within the scheme.  The provision of new vocabulary banks has improved staff confidence to deliver more bilingual approach to their project work.

  • Alys Lewis (Welsh in Education Officer) has provided training on phonics, reading and exemplar lessons for staff to observe.  This has enabled staff to upskill their application of reading schemes and strategies to improve learner progress.  As a result, pupils are now receiving regular reading drills which are improving how they read and translate Welsh sentences to English.

  • Welsh AfL systems have had a very positive effect on learner progress and the development of the Welsh language.  Our younger learners use Welsh sentence stems linked to our LPS AfL approach (Mr Men) which has led to improved pupil led self-assessment across the curriculum.  Learners higher up the school are becoming more involved and independent in assessing their progress bilingually and planning their next steps for improvement.

  • The Fa La La scheme has improved learner enthusiasm for the Welsh language and supported the retention of key phrases and vocabulary.  Learners have enjoyed being immersed within the Welsh Language during cluster gigs, where they are embedding the key patterns learned within the scheme.

  • Through many initiatives, developmental activities and events it is increasingly evident that the profile of the Welsh language and the development of a sense of Cynefin has improved enormously through activities such as:

    • Dydd Miwsig Cymru and Ynni Da Power Pedal Disco visit.

    • Cluster Menter Iaith enrichment games events

    • LPS Eisteddfod and the Urdd National Eisteddfod

    • Criw iaith Wlesh assemblies to deliver progress, developments and new initiatives.

    • PTFA and Criw Parent Welsh Evening

    • Criw Iaith working with other Pupil Voice Groups to influence the development of Welsh through other areas of the curriculum and school environment.

  • Due to the success of the Cluster working to raise standards in Welsh and bilingualism, the Head of Welsh in Education Officer for Swansea has requested we share excellent practice with schools and clusters across the authority.
