During SLT monitoring and Workbook Scrutiny we identified that:

• Workbook scrutiny demonstrates that our younger learners are developing the cursive form with confidence, improving their fine motor skills and over-all presentation and style.

• Nearly all of our older learners are taking part in weekly handwriting sessions to support their development of cursive handwriting. 

• Supportive systems in place such as staff modelling and the Presentation Dojo, reward the use of cursive handwriting throughout all written work, to encourage further development in our policy.

• More consistency of policy and scheme application across the school and to be reviewed next round of reviews.

• PVG members completed a workbook scrutiny session to evaluate the development of cursive handwriting across the school. Lesson observations in Reception identified that for many learners, the cursive alphabet was a barrier to phonic development. Therefore, from next year cursive handwriting will be taught from Year 1. Cursive handwriting is fully embedded from Year1- 4 with most learners making good progress. Many learners have developed a cursive style in Years 5 and 6 however there continues to be inconsistencies in handwriting style. There are examples of teacher marking and peer assessments highlighting these inconsistencies however further monitoring and staff modelling is required.

Next Steps:

1. Improve consistency of implementation of cursive handwriting to all areas of learning, across the school, particularly in the older classes.

2. Ensure that all staff are modelling cursive handwriting in everything they do, at all times, therefore complying with the LPS Handwriting Policy.

3. This whole school target will move to LLC AoLE annual monitoring within their Action Plans.
