Summer
- Phonics assessments across progression step 1 and 2 show that most learners are progressing at age appropriate levels. Assessments have identified those in need of consolidation and within the boost group sessions, are making steady progress.
- Reading carousel is carried out across nearly all classes with further consistency in approach therefore ensuring reading is taught daily, with targeted intervention for small groups of learners within each class.
- Staff questionnaires demonstrated that nearly all teaching staff feel that Vocabulary Ninja has improved enthusiasm for spelling, with nearly all making the necessary adaptations to word lists to suit their groups of learners. Within Year 1 and 2, word lists are adapted to incorporate phonic blends and high frequency words with only the more able learners ready to access Vocabulary Ninja word lists.
- Workbook scrutiny demonstrates that in many classes, learners are writing to a very good standard in a range of genres, linked to their LPS Learning Projects. However, further consistency and variety is required across the school in the development of writing (planning, drafting and editing) and creative writing.
- PVG members completed a workbook scrutiny session to evaluate the development of cursive handwriting across the school. Lesson observations in Reception identified that for many learners, the cursive alphabet was a barrier to phonic development. Therefore, from next year cursive handwriting will be taught from Year 1. Cursive handwriting is fully embedded from Year1- 4 with most learners making good progress. Many learners have developed a cursive style in Years 5 and 6 however there continues to be inconsistencies in handwriting style. There are examples of teacher marking and peer assessments highlighting these inconsistencies however further monitoring and staff modelling is required.
- Written Welsh continues to be of a good quality across the school in most classes. When listening to learners, they could describe drillio and helpwyr y dydd activities that have supported their fluency of age-appropriate patterns however a new scheme will be introduced to raise standards further in Oracy and Reading.
- Team Teaching and opportunities to observe good practice has improved our staff skill set in order to teach the early stages of Welsh reading and improve standards of reading across the school.
Next steps:
- Reading – PVG continue to monitor reading carousel and AOLE monitor standards through termly assessments on Insight and within boost groups.
- Phonics - Progression Step 1 & 2 focus on combining Jolly Phonics with Fast Phonics from N-Y2 to support all learners. Once all learners are secure with all blends, they will move on to Vocabulary Ninja.
- Writing - Autumn Term 2024, ADDs session on Literacy Booklet and build up to writing with focus on text features, planning skeletons, drafting and editing and creative writing.
- Handwriting - Make adaptations to scheme for our Reception class to improve letter recognition and phonic development. PVG to undertake regular monitoring of presentation and handwriting across the school with a focus on consistency and challenge particularly amongst older learners.
- Spelling - Made adaptations to Vocabulary Ninja for our Year 1 class to ensure all phonics blends and high frequency words are secure before moving on to more difficult spelling patterns.
- Welsh - AOLE lead to create bespoke scheme to support incidental Welsh across the school to raise standards of spoken Welsh. PVG link with Penyrheol Primary and Penllergaer Primary to promote Welsh across the cluster and in turn, raise standards of engagement with Welsh at LPS.
