Spring Term Review

During our Spring Term Review Fortnight, the AoLE Leader and members of the Humanity Heroes PVG undertook book looks and listening to learners activities. We spoke with children from across both phases about the LPS RVE Big Questions.

Main Objective: To develop standards of RVE at LPS.

During the Spring Term there has been a definite shift in the coverage of the Big Questions. The children spoken to were able to talk about and answer questions on what they had been learning and spoke with interest and enjoyment.

In Progression Step 1 there was lots of evidence of the Big Questions being taught and covered in a variety of creative ways. Children had been finding out about St David’s Day which enabled them to develop their sense of Cynefin while leaning about the meaning of religious stories. Children had the opportunity to visit the local church to explore the meaning of Easter, along with a variety of activities on various religious festivals they were able to explore and talk about different religious symbols and practises, to get a wider understanding of different faiths.

In Progression step 2 the Year 2 the children explored how different groups demonstrated belonging to their faiths, allowing them to understand how people express who they are throughout different faiths. In Year 3 the children researched the Jewish faith, to find the meaning of Passover, so they have a wider understanding of a range of different faiths.

In Progression step 3 we found a definite shift in coverage of the Big Questions this term. In Year 4 the children had been focussing on how different faiths express their commitment towards their religions. Children spoke in detail of their focus question ‘Creation or science?’ and explained how they had been delving into a range of faiths to get a clearer understanding as to why Darwin and Wallace’s theories were so controversial, which gave the children the opportunity to become more ethically informed citizens.

Our next steps:

  • Humanity Heroes to plan and deliver RVE ‘Big Question’ assemblies.
  • Further develop links with local parish and the wider community.
  • Develop questionnaire for staff to gain and understanding if support is needed on undertaking further Big Questions.
