Mr Burnell has asked us to organise the biggest, brightest and most beautiful spring festival that celebrates all the cultures within our wonderful community. Are we up for this challenge? How do different people celebrate events in Llangyfelach, Swansea and around the world? Why do people celebrate and what are they celebrating? Let’s explore through stories, arts, dance, music and foods – let the party begin! Celebrations are deigned to bring people together, let’s look at similarities and differences between various celebrations and festivals to plan a day for all!
We worked together to come up with questions that we would like to find the answers to during this topic:
We started our learning journey by looking at the Spring months on the calendar. We decided that the months we were learning about were January, February, March and April. We watched some clips on CBeebies about Spring Festivals and decided that we would like to learn about St Dwynwen’s Day, Chinese New Year, Valentines Day, St David’s Day, Mother’s Day, Eid, Holi and Easter.
What an amazing time we had at Llangyfelach Church this morning! Father Anthony was brilliant! He told us all about the church and the festivals they celebrate in church. He told us what happens in christenings and we got to pour the holy water into the font! Some of us even poured the holy water on to Father Anthony’s head! He showed us his special robes and some of us tried them on! We talked about the Easter story and Father Anthony gave us some books to take home! What a fantastic trip!
We enjoyed listening to Miss Evans tell us the story of Chinese New Year! Click here to watch us retell it!
One of our favourite festivals to celebrate are our birthdays! We enjoyed chatting about how we celebrate our birthdays and discussing what month our birthdays are in! Click here to watch us sharing when our birthdays are!
Our favourite Welsh festival to celebrate is St David's Day! We celebrated St David's Day in school by taking part in a fabulous Eisteddfod! We performed a recital, we sang songs and Mrs Bate told us who had won the competitions! Click here to see how we celebrated St David's Day!
