Next week in maths we will be learning all about subtraction. To help us get ready, please complete the activities below at home. These tasks focus on the key skills we will be using in class.
1. Practise counting back
Start from numbers up to 20 and practise counting backwards.
Example: Start at 15 and count back to 10.
2. Subtraction using objects
Use small objects at home (buttons, pasta pieces, LEGO bricks).
Count a group, then take some away and say how many are left.
Example: “I have 8 pieces of pasta. I take away 3. Now I have 5.”
3. Write simple subtraction number sentences
Have your child write or copy 5 simple subtraction facts.
Examples:
7 − 2 = __
10 − 4 = __
5 − 1 = __
4. Talk about subtraction in real life
Look for subtraction in everyday situations.
Examples:
– “We had 6 apples. We ate 2. How many do we have now?”
– “There are 5 cars on the street. 1 drives away. How many are left?”
Try solving a subtraction word problem together:
“Sam has 9 stickers. He gives 4 to a friend. How many stickers does he have now?”
