Mathematics

This week we have been learning how to find half of numbers up to 20. Remember, when you halve a number, you split it into 2 equal groups.

Play a fractions game on Topmarks and practise finding halves:
https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/5-7-years/fractions

Find some small objects such as Lego bricks, counters, buttons or pieces of pasta. Choose an even number up to 20 and split the objects into 2 equal groups. Can you find:

  • Half of 6
  • Half of 10
  • Half of 14
  • Half of 18

Write your answers in a sentence:

  • Half of 10 is 5.
  • Half of 18 is 9.

Extension Challenge:
Can you work backwards?

  • Double 4 is 8, so half of 8 is ___.
  • Double 7 is 14, so half of 14 is ___.
  • Double 9 is 18, so half of 18 is ___.

High-Frequency Word Game:
https://ictgames.com/mobilePage/literacy.html

Can you write 10 high-frequency words on pieces of paper and get someone to place them around a room. Read each word as you find it. Can you:

  • Read the word quickly?
  • Spell the word aloud?
  • Put the word into a sentence?

Topic

Can you design an animal feeder that will withstand all four seasons – spring, summer, autumn and winter?

Think carefully about:

  • What animal your feeder is for.
  • How it will stay dry when it rains.
  • How it will stay strong when it is windy.
  • How it will protect food during hot and cold weather.

Draw and label your design. If you would like to, you can also write:

  • What materials you would use.
  • Why you chose these materials.
  • How your feeder will help animals throughout the year.

Challenge: Explain which part of your feeder will make it strong enough to survive all four seasons.

Please bring your designs into school on Friday to share during Friday Reflection.
