Provide real life learning experiences that are enriched using outdoor spaces, locally and wider.
Many classes have formed strong links within the local community, providing a real-life context for learning. For example, our younger pupils have made links within the local community, with our Year 2 pupils learning taking an active role in the conservation of Penllergaer Woods. Our Year 3 class have based their LPS project around Swansea Market and have formed strong links with the stallholders and the Market manager, learning first-hand the skills required to develop their own LPS Market.
Links have been formed with the local Scout Group in order to share their provision for outdoor learning and forest school activities. Outdoor provision has been enriched through curriculum design, ensuring pupils have the opportunity to learn in a real-life context. Skills are developed through LPS projects while using the outdoor spaces to enrich their wellbeing and context for learning.
Many pupils use this area to also undertake forest school activities, led by Level 3 Forest School leaders, which offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. The process facilitates development physically, intellectually, socially, emotionally and spiritually.
Forest school sessions are largely child-led, allowing for exploration and creativity while developing independent, resilient learners. Alongside this, Forest School Leaders, offer opportunities to develop bush craft skills under the following themes:
Forest School sessions provide opportunities for all learners to develop their reflection skills (Objective 1) whilst in an alternative environment. This demonstrates to the children that reflective thinking isn't just for classroom learning...it is a real life skill. During the end of every Forest School session learners discuss what they have achieved, what challenges they faced and how they overcome them. They also discuss what the plans should be for the next Forest School session. The Forest School Leader undertakes observations that inform future planning for individuals and groups of learners. Pupil Voice is very strong during these sessions as they help shape their current and future learning paths.
