Protecting threatened species around the world has become the number one objective for Zoologists around the globe. One of the most successful conservation centres in the world is Swansea’s fantastic Plantasia. Can we help them protect endangered species and habitats of the world? Let’s explore food chains, habitats and wonderful Welsh wildlife; compared with those across the Rainforest Belt.  Let’s learn how human activity has endangered these wonderful ecosystems and what others are doing to protect and conserve them for the future of our planet. Time is running out - these fantastic environments hold the key to our future – we need to act now! Let’s go to the Amazon!

We had a mystery delivery to our classroom! It was a big brown box! We opened it and inside it was maps, animal fur, animal footprints, a banana, coffee and a pineapple! We tried to work out what all the clues meant! Then we found a letter from Plantasia telling us the rainforests were in danger and they need our help!

We used the LPS Question Matrix to come up with questions about the rainforests that we wanted to know the answers to! We want to find out:

  • What animals might live in the rainforests?
  • Why might animals have different prints and markings?
  • Where are all the rainforests?
  • How do bananas grow?
  • Why is palm oil bad?
  • What parts of the rainforests do the animals live in?
  • Which animals are in danger?
  • How can we look after the rainforests?
  • How do coffee beans grow?
  • How does Plantasia look after the rainforests?

To start our learning, Plantasia have asked us to create a display wall at their site about the Rainforests of the World… Can we help them inform their visitors of the deforestation and their endangered species? We decided to research one of our QM questions here and investigated which animals are in danger in the rainforests. We researched facts about these important animals, in preparation to write our information texts.
