  • Summer Term - Swansea Bay Magazine

Have you ever wondered what’s happening around Swansea Bay and the beautiful Gower coast?

There’s a free monthly magazine called The Bay Magazine, made especially for people who live in Swansea and Gower. Its job is simple but important: to inform, educate, and entertain the local community.

Right now, Swansea Bay is going through lots of exciting changes! New buildings, projects and ideas are helping the area grow and improve. Because of this, The Bay Magazine shares lots of exciting stories that keep everyone up to date.

    But that’s not all!

Swansea and Gower are also home to some of the most beautiful natural places in the UK. The magazine also wants to help people learn just how special this environment is and how we can all help protect it so it stays amazing for years to come.

To help with this, Year 2 have been asked to become young reporters! We will explore the changes happening in Swansea, find out the reasons behind them and think about how we can protect our wonderful natural environment at the same time.

Get ready Year 2 to become explorers of your own local area, because Swansea Bay is changing, and your story starts here!

We kickstarted this terms topic by learning how to write an article. Then we found out what current issues Swansea Bay was facing and created our first article for The Bay Magazine.

We did lots of research on how people can look after and protect the seaside and made posters to put in the Bay Magazine.

We became environment superheroes and used our drama and oracy skills to act out scenes where we stop people from damaging the environment and tell them why it's a bad idea.

We wanted to find out what it meant to live a good life, so we came up with lots of ideas on what we thought a good life would have. Then we thought about how Swansea Bay can help people to live a good life.

We used our map skills and created a tourist map for the Bay Magazine, showing readers where all the best tourist attractions are along Swansea Bay.

We became history detectives and looked at the history of one of Swansea Bays biggest tourist attractions.

We developed our artistic skills and created artwork in the style of Welsh artist Rhiannon Roberts. We included lots of the tourist attractions from Swansea in our work, just as Rhiannon does in her pieces.

We have been learning to celebrate our differences and thought about what made us special and unique.

We listened to the music White Water by Karl Jenkins and this inspired us to get very creative. We created shape poems linked to the sea for the readers of the Bay Magazine to enjoy. We used similes and alliteration in our poems.

Swansea Council asked us if we could design some new beach huts for Swansea Bay. After we carried out an investigation on different materials to see if they were waterproof and windproof, we chose the best material to use to make a beach hut. Then we designed our own beach huts, which had to include special features.

We have been writing Welsh role-play scripts. We thought about what we would say and ask if we were visiting a beach shop, as well as what we would say if we were the shopkeeper. We then acted out our scripts in the role-play area, practising our Welsh speaking and listening skills.
