Target 3

To enhance presentation and handwriting across the school, the implementation of a new cursive handwriting scheme has taken place this term. At LPS, the whole community encourages all learners to take pride in the presentation of their work. nearly all learners understand, by the end of Year 6, the importance of neat presentation and the need for different letterform (cursive, printed or capital letters) to help communicate meaning clearly.

During SLT monitoring and Workbook Scrutiny we identified that:

  • New LPS Curriculum Projects have been fully embedded across all classes, with many learners demonstrating high standards of written work through their topic and enquiry based learning, equitable to the standard within their standalone literacy work.

  • The introduction of the new cursive handwriting scheme, Letter Join, has been introduced across the school and has had a positive impact on presentation for many learners - even in its early stages.

  • Workbook scrutiny demonstrates that our younger learners are embracing the new cursive form with confidence, improving their fine motor skills and over-all presentation and style.

  • Nearly all of our older learners are taking part in weekly handwriting sessions to support their development of cursive handwriting.

  • Supportive systems in place such as staff modelling and the Presentation Dojo, reward the use of cursive handwriting throughout all written work, in order to fully embed the approach.

  • However, this approach has tailed off across the school towards the second half of the academic year in some classes.

  • More consistency of policy and scheme application across the school and to be reviewed next academic year.

Next Steps:

  1. Improve consistency of cursive handwriting sessions across the school (weekly).
  2. Improve consistency of implementation of cursive handwriting to all areas of learning, across the school.
  3. Ensure that all staff are modelling cursive handwriting in everything they do, at all times., therefore complying with the LPS Handwriting Policy.
