Play, Learn and Grow Together

Week: 11/05/20

Welcome to the Home Learning Area for Year 4. Below is a list of activities for your children to complete throughout the week, at their own leisure.

The Home Learning Area will be updated for the start of every Monday and feedback will be provided on the tasks completed by the children.

Thank you very much for your co-operation during this time.

Mr Parker.

To see all the great work you shared last week, follow the link below:

Home Learning Area Tasks for the week of: 11/05/2020

MyMaths: https://www.mymaths.co.uk/

In the top left-hand corner select 'Curriculum for Wales'. Then, from the 'Library', choose 'Using Number Skills'. From the options given here, choose 'Estimate and Check'.  Then select 'Y4 - Solving problems by rounding'.  Click on 'Lesson', where you will find some practice tasks.

I would like you to have a go at the activities available there before completing the task that has been set to you this week.

The task can be found here: https://app.mymaths.co.uk/70-homework/solving-problems-by-rounding

If you would like some more general maths practice, Top Marks have some great games that can be found at this link: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/ordering-and-sequencing-numbers

If you don't get things correct first time, keep trying the tasks until you have a better understanding or ask for help.  If you have any problems with the task, please get in touch and I'll be happy to help.

Reading: Fairtrade Reading Comprehension

Instead of a Giglets book, this week I would like you to have a go at answering these questions based on Fairtrade.  Read the fact sheet carefully, answer the questions and then use the answer sheet at the end to check your work.

Present the work in any way that suits you.  For example, writing answers on a piece of paper or on Microsoft Word etc.

Topic Work: Fairtrade Presentation

Thank you for all your great questions about our new topic, it's great to see your enthusiasm!  I thought we could start this week by focusing on Fairtrade as many of you showed an interest in learning more about this.  Some of the questions you asked and things you would like to research were:

  • "What is Fairtrade and why is it important?" - Joel
  • "I would like to know what fairtrade is. I think it is about helping poor countries.  I think it is to do with growing things on farms in countries far away and bringing them into our country.  I would like to find out more about this and see if I can help." - Fraser
  • "How many countries have a fairtrade policy?" - Lexie
  • "When was the first fair trade?" - Ronnie
  • "Who first thought of the idea of fair-trade?" - Bethan
  • "Why should we buy fairtrade food?" - Oliver

I would like you to research Fairtrade and make a presentation using PowerPoint to explain what you have found out.  You could use the questions above to guide your research.  Perhaps you would like to use the fact file from this week's reading comprehension task as a starting point for your research. There are some other links that might help you below too.
